Arizona Soccer and the US Open Cup

As the 104th Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is about to kickoff, let’s take a look back at how our Arizona teams have faired in the last decade.

The furthest one of our teams has made it in the cup was back in 2014 when Arizona United won through to the 4th round before meeting the mighty LA Galaxy in Peoria. A Matt Kassel strike had given Arizona a surprise 1-0 lead at the half before a quick-fire Gyasi Zardes double in the second half sealed the tie for Galaxy. Highlights of the game can be seen here.

In 2013 FC Tucson made it into the 3rd round only to find MLS giants Houston Dynamos awaiting. A brave performance by Tucson on the night was not enough to stop them going down by 2 goals to 0 at the BBVA Compass Stadium. Alex Dixon and Giles Barnes provided the goals.

Arizona Sahuaros competed in the cup several times but were never able to make it past the second round. They did, however, play a certain Seattle Sounders in 2008! Sounders had eliminated another Arizona team, Banat Arsenal the previous year.

Let’s hope this year can be a fruitful one for our local teams. FC Tucson starts their campaign with a 1st round match against Colorado Rush on May 10th and Phoenix Rising kick off theirs in the 2nd round when they travel to either Fresno Fuego (PDL) or fellow California side La Máquina FC on May 17th.
