AZ Soccer’s Weekly Roundup -14th May

It was a rather nail biting week for soccer in AZ between FC Tucson’s last minute US Open Cup success, FC Arizona’s goalless tie down in OC, and Sean Wright-Phillips last minute screamer for Phoenix Rising. This week really was an example of why we love soccer so much!

US Open Cup Round 1: Colorado Rush 1 FC Tucson 3

It all started down in Tucson on Wednesday night as FC Tucson entertained Colorado Rush in the US Open Cup 1st Round. The home side ran out deserved 3-1 winners but needed late goals from Perez and Pinheiro to seal their place in the 2nd round.

PDL: FC Tucson 2 San Diego Zest 0

USL: OKC Energy 1 Phoenix Rising 2

Phoenix Rising entertained OKC Energy in the USL Western Conference, a team they had not had much success against in recent years, at the Phoenix Rising Soccer complex on Saturday night. A 94th-minute winner from Rising’s Sean Wright-Phillips secured a 2-1 victory and a most welcomed 3 points. Rising move to a (3-3-0) record.

NPSL: Orange County FC 0 FC Arizona 0

NPSL league leaders FC Arizona travelled down to fellow undefeated Orange County FC on league duty on Saturday night. A hard-fought match ended in a 0-0 stalemate. This is the second time this season these teams have played out a goalless tie. Unfortunately for Arizona, second place Riverside picked up a 7-1 victory on the road to bottom side Angels to regain top spot. FC Arizona’s record is now (6-0-3)
