FC Tucson to entertain Rush in US Open Cup

The 104th Lamar Hunt US Open Cup draw has paired FC Tucson with open division qualifiers Colorado Rush in the 1st Round. This will be Tucson’s 4th appearance in the cup in the last 5 years. Rush qualified for the cup with wins against FC Boulder and Marathon Taverna in the 1st and 2nd qualifying rounds respectively. The match is scheduled to be played at Tucson’s Kino North Stadium on May 10th with a 7.30pm kickoff.

If FC Tucson makes it through their first round match, they will face another Colorado team a week later on May 17th. However, this time it will be Colorado’s professional USL team Colorado Spring Switchbacks. The match will be played at Weidner Field, Colorado, with a 6 pm MT kickoff.

Tucson will be hoping to improve on last seasons 2nd round exit to fellow Arizona team Arizona United (now Phoenix Rising) after they had eliminated San Nicolas by 3 goals to 0 in the 1st round. The 2015 cup saw Tucson eliminated in the 1st round by Chula Vista.

Here is FC Tucson’s record in the Cup;

2016 – 2nd Round
2015 – 1st Round
2014 – Did not enter
2013 – 3rd Round

Phoenix Rising who enter the cup at the 2nd round stage await the winners of Fresno Fuego (PDL) and fellow California side La Máquina FC. La Máquina FC came through the open division qualifiers. The game is scheduled for May 17th and will be played in either Fresno or Santa Ana.

Arizona teams have had mixed fortunes in the cup over the last decade.  A full list of results can be found here.
